5 Tastes for a Healthy Meal
Eating habits have changed along with advancement in science and technology. All foods are now available throughout the year and can be sourced from any part of the world with modern transport facilities. This has proved to be a bliss for your taste buds, but at the same time it has affected health adversely.
In earlier times, eating habits were governed by the local climate and seasonal influences. People used to consume only seasonal foods available locally and that was the secret behind their good health. Seasonal fruits and vegetables have the nutrients fit for attaining wellness in that particular season. There is a taste associated with each season and that particular taste is found in the seasonal produce.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and ancient Indian medical science (Ayurveda), each season is associated with taste that offers cooling or heating effect on the body. In order to keep all the organ systems and entire body healthy, one would have to include five vital tastes in every meal. Having a balanced meal with all 5 key tastes would ensure good health.

01. Sweet –This is the taste that soothes your senses. It is an instant stress buster and calms you down. The organs like stomach and pancreas get involved in the process of sugar absorption. Having a dessert post meal would accelerate the process of digestion. You can include naturally sweet foods in your meal like corn, fruits, nuts, and rice. These foods would give you energy boost. Say no to white sugar as it will bring health hazard disguised in sweetness.
02. Bitter –Little bitterness will give you sweet treats. This taste flushes out toxins from your body. There is positive effect on small intestine and heart. Some bitter foods worth eating are bitter gourd, turmeric, kale, coffee, celery, mustard greens, and parsley. Include them in your meals and cleanse your body of harmful toxins.
